On November 15, 2000, Ill. Ernest Borgnine, 33°, Grand Cross, addressed the Brethren of Virginia in a letter accepting the Honorary Chairmanship of a program to support the Scottish Rite Childhood Language Center at Richmond, Inc. The letter states:

My Dear Brethren:

When I received my 50-year Masonic pin commemorating the fact that I had been a Virginia Freemason for 50 years, Illustrious Brother [James B.] Wilkinson asked me to serve as Honorary Chairman of the Every Member Canvas for next year to raise money for the Clinic at Richmond. I gladly accepted this challenge, as this work of helping children communicate holds a very dear and honorable place in my heart. The Scottish Rite helps children from every walk of life to become useful and contributing individuals in our society.

Your Center is an outstanding one, and I truly understand the expense of its operation. Your work in this particular field shows the heart that Freemasonry has in helping other people in general and children in particular.

There are many children in our nation that suffer from communication disorders. Through your efforts and endeavors, you are helping to free these children from speech, language, and hearing disorders. You do it in a spirit of happiness and joy. Without your intervention, these children may never experience success. With your help, they can become leaders and contribute to society. This is a blessing of which you can be proud! Your cash or pledge contribution will support this work so it may be continued without interruption.

There is no greater calling than when we help a child understand language and be able to communicate more effectively. I thank you for any help you might render to assist in this great undertaking.

Fraternally and sincerely,

Ernest Borgnine, 33°, Grand Cross
