We have a truly fantastic donor profile to share with you this month. Illustrious William Jarboe Wohlfarth, 33°, recently established the William Jarboe Wohlfarth Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust and a life estate naming the House of the Temple Historic Preservation Foundation, Inc., as the remainder beneficiary. As one of the largest planned gifts the Foundation has ever received, we are most appreciative of his generosity. Bro. Wohlfarth is a member of Columbia Lodge No. 285, Arlington, Virginia, and is a Scottish Rite Mason in the Valley of Washington, D.C. He has been a member of the Fraternity for 69 years and a Scottish Rite Mason for over 40 years. In October 2001, he will become a 70-year member of Columbia Lodge, No. 285. Ill. William is an entrepreneur with vast experience in the building trade, automotive business, and real estate development.
| On a recent visit to the House of the Temple, we were able to capture a picture of four generations of Wohlfarths. The four generations included Ill. William Jarboe Wohlfarth, 33°; his son, Bro. Robert W. Wohlfarth, 32°; his grandson, Bro. Paul M. Wohlfarth, and his great-grandson Kevin Wohlfarth, age 5. | ![]() |
Born in Washington, D.C., in 1906, he began his career as a master plumber and also started buying property and building homes in Chevy Chase, Maryland. His first company, the William J. Wohlfarth Plumbing Company, was founded in 1931. This company merged with F.M. Amberger Plumbing Company in 1936 and operates today as Amberger and Wohlfarth, Inc. The current President of Amberger and Wohlfarth, Inc., is William's son, Bro. Robert W. Wohlfarth, 32°, Valley of Washington, D.C. From 1941 through 1955, Ill. Wohlfarth operated the Edgemoor Motor Co., a Ford dealership in Bethesda, Maryland, and in 1949 he was the President of the Greater BethesdaChevy Chase Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of Civitan, a Charter/Life Member of the Friendship Lions Club, and an Honorary Member of Kenwood Golf and Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland. In 1939, he signed the original charter of the Washington Suburban Master Plumbers Association and proudly serves as a Charter/Honorary Member today.
Ill. Wohlfarth's family includes 6 children, 24 grandchildren, and 33 great-grandchildren. Bro. William treasures his family, and his home is filled with countless family photographs. One of his prized possessions is a letter of appreciation from his grandson Jim. It is a letter every grandfather would love to receive. In it, Jim writes, "I just wanted to tell you that I really appreciate having a grandfather like you and wanted to say how much you have meant to me. I just wanted to tell you how much you have influenced my life. I really enjoyed talking with you and learning from you over the years. You gave me confidence to believe in myself when I would otherwise have given up." These are just a few words from the wonderful letter William keeps prominently displayed in his home.
William's other great passion in life, besides his family, is golf. His other hobbies, swimming, fishing, bowling, and horseshoes became secondary interests as soon as he began playing golf. He feels golf taught him some great lessons about himself and pushed him to develop better skills. As you can probably tell, Brother William is a person who enjoys a challenge. Typical of his interest in the sport, Ill. Wohlfarth requested a golfing scene as the background of the Scottish Rite Hall of Honor original oil portrait. (See front cover.)
It is an honor for the House of the Temple Historic Preservation Foundation to display a portrait of Ill. William Jarboe Wohlfarth in our magnificent Scottish Rite headquarters, and we invite any visitor to the House of the Temple to stop by and see it. Bro. William is recognized as a Supreme Temple Architect, the highest level of donor, and his name also appears in the Pillars of Charity Alcove in the House of the Temple. Ill. Wohlfarth is truly a great Scottish Rite Mason and philanthropist.
William's grandson, Paul M. Wohlfarth, is a new member of Highlands Lodge No. 86 in Denver, Colorado. Ill. William Jarboe Wohlfarth's son, Bro. Robert W. Wohlfarth, 32°, Valley of Washington, D.C., has been a member of the Fraternity for over 30 years. So the Wohlfarth's now have three generations active in Freemasonry. On a recent visit to the House of the Temple, we were able to capture a picture of four generations of Wohlfarths (above). The four generations included Ill. William Jarboe Wohlfarth, 33°; his son, Bro. Robert W. Wohlfarth, 32°; his grandson, Bro. Paul M. Wohlfarth, and his great-grandson Kevin Wohlfarth, age 5.
Last year, William's family visited the House of the Temple to discuss his gift to the House of the Temple Historic Preservation Foundation, Inc. Our Development Office had the distinct pleasure of working with Ill. Wohlfarth and his family to establish the William Jarboe Wohlfarth Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust. The trust and the financial transactions took a great deal of time and effort on Bro. William's part, but he was patient and a true gentleman through all of the legal and accounting details. Words cannot express our sincere gratitude for such a generous contribution to the House of the Temple Historic Preservation Foundation, Inc.
We wish the entire Fraternity could have the opportunity to meet Illustrious William Jarboe Wohlfarth, 33°, a truly great man and Mason.
Brother William, we thank you!
