Grandparents never stop sharing the joys and challenges of parenting.

When we look at our grandchildren, perhaps gathered around the New Year's Day table, we see who they are and what we hope they will become. My vision of the grandchildren in my family sees very distinct personalities and spirits. They have very little guile but certainly know how to influence their parents (or grandparents), with just a look or suggestion, as to what they want and when they want it, which is usually now.

Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoy being with these little ones who make me feel younger. I enjoy the freshness of their thoughts and words. Sometimes they challenge me, so I keep a watchful eye, and when they cross the line, I respond accordingly. I love to see their energy and how sports challenge them, but what delights me most is to watch them think, seeing their minds speed along. It is surprising how they understand us better then we sometimes understand ourselves. And I am amazed at the vast amounts of knowledge they absorb, sponge like, in a few years. Also, I am moved to see how they love in their own way and without reservation.

These young people are going to be the answer to our future. Watching them being groomed for that responsibility is very important to me, so I make every effort to spend time with them and just be there for them. So parents, keep up the good work during this new year, and you will reap the wonderful rewards I have had over these past 40+ years. Remember, parenting never stops.
