What we witnessed on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, was an act of hatred. While we are saddened and deeply touched by the events, we must also remember our greater responsibilities as leaders in Freemasonry and our communities.

There are cries of revenge and retribution, but we must assure that these are not misdirected against the wrong people or groups. Not all Arabs are Muslims; not all Muslins are fanatics or zealots; not all foreigners are terrorists.

If we are to have hatred or warfare, it must be directed at those things that Masonry has always warred against and hated: despotic power, anarchy, prejudice, malevolence, wickedness in high places, and a thousand other vices.

Remember, it is better to love than to hate; that your duty is not to be better than your neighbor, but to be better than yourself; and the more you have, the more you owe to those who need assistance.
