Book Reviews: Nunc Dimittis

The phrase nunc dimittis is a part of the Episcopal service of Evensong. Also known as the Canticle of Simeon, it starts with these words from Luke 2:29, “Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen: thy salvation.” It has come to mean a situation in which something long hoped for arrives—roughly the equivalent of “Now I’ve seen it all,” or “Now I can die happy.”

Ten-year old Zach Crosier is a charter student of Radford University’s Summer Language Clinic for children with autism and language-related disorders. His grandmother walked four blocks in the summer to take Zach to the clinic, and at Wednesday’s Scottish Rite Luncheon at RU, his mother, Mary Vaughn, told the assembly that the clinic has had a major impact on her son’s life.

An anonymous donor and Scottish Rite Mason recently made a $1,000,000 pledge to the House of the Temple Historic Preservation Foundation, Inc. through a whole life insurance policy. This generous bequest will greatly assist in maintaining and preserving the House of the Temple, its museum, library, archives, and special exhibits.

At the recent Annual Missouri DeMolay State Conclave in Jefferson City, the DeMolay of Missouri honored “Dad” Earl E. Walker with one of their highest honors: induction into the Missouri DeMolay Hall of Fame. State Master Councilor, Ryan Cockerham, and his father, Grand Master of DeMolay International, Robert Cockerham, 33°, SGIG in Missouri, presided over the festivities in Jefferson City with over 500 DeMolays and guests from across the state.

Yes! In 1794 Bro. James Sketchley, Birmingham, England, issued a private copper token with this legend, “24 Nov. 1790 Prince of Wales Elected G. M\” This was George Augustus Frederick who later reigned as George IV, 1820–1830, and he was Grand Master of the premier Grand Lodge of England (Moderns).
