Considering current low CD and other interest rates, a Charitable Gift
Annuity to the Scottish Rite Foundation, S.J., offers an extremely
interesting income and tax-planning tool.

Want a return on your money that is better than the 2% you are getting on your CDs or your savings accounts? Want to give a gift to support the RiteCare Childhood Language Program? You can accomplish both goals with a contribution to the Scottish Rite Foundation, S.J., USA, Inc.'s Charitable Gift Annuity Program. With a minimum gift of $5,000, the Scottish Rite Foundation's Charitable Gift Annuity Program will provide fixed payments for life. These payments, in most cases, are partially tax-free and provide a tax deduction for the donor. The annuity amount is a fixed amount and will not change, regardless of market conditions. If you contribute an appreciated asset such as stock, in most instances, you will reduce the capital gains tax you would recognize from a sale of the asset and still receive a tax deduction.

But exactly what is a Charitable Gift Annuity? A Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) is a CONTRACT under which, in return for a transfer of cash or marketable securities, the Scottish Rite Foundation, S.J., agrees to pay a fixed sum of money for a period measured only by one or two lives (not a term of years). A person who receives payments is called an "annuitant." The fixed payments (called the "annuity") are set and unchanged for the term of the contract. In addition, the annuity payments are NOT called "income," because a portion of the payments are considered to be a tax-free return of the donor's gift, spread in equal payments over the life expectancy of the annuitants.

Remember that the CGA is a gift, not an investment: you cannot get the money or property back in later years. The contributed property, given irrevocably, becomes a part of the charity's assets, and the annuity payments to the annuitant are a general obligation of the Scottish Rite Foundation. CGAs are not federally insured or insured by any state. Rather, the Scottish Rite Foundation's entire assets, not just by the property contributed by the donor, back up the annuity.

The fixed rate (for life) for a:
60 year old is 5.7%
70 year old is 6.5%
80 year old is 8.0%
90 year old is 11.3%.

Considering current low CD and other interest rates, the Scottish Rite Foundation offers an extremely interesting income and tax-planning tool. How much of a tax deduction did your CD provide last year? And how much of it was free of tax?

To find out what your rate and possible tax deduction would be, please call Barbara Golden at 1- 866-448-3773, and she will send you a detailed analysis of a contribution to the Scottish Rite Foundation Charitable Gift Annuity Program. Remember, a donor has the ability to name a local Scottish Rite Foundation as the remainder beneficiary, and we recently have processed a number of CGA contracts that benefit the local foundations. Again, we appreciate your interest in supporting our Foundations' charitable projects through gifts like CGAs.
