The Legacy Scholarship Program at Texas Scottish
Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) was created to give former
patients an opportunity to further their education and training
beyond high school. The program provides financial assistance
and a support network for former patients who wish to attend
a college of their choice or a technical school to receive career
training.
"Our scholarship recipients have overcome
obstacles in their lives and continue to excel in spite of what
others might consider to be significant handicaps or disabilities,"
said Gladys Kolenovsky, president of the Legacy Scholarship
Program. "The scholarships and support network help strengthen
former patients' confidence, fulfill their educational goals,
and set them on the road to future independence."
Since the Legacy Scholarship Program's inception
in 1986, it has awarded more than 840 scholarships, totaling
nearly $900,000. For the 2001-2002 school year, the Legacy Scholarship
Program awarded $139,800 in scholarships, including 82 scholarships
and 10 Legacy Rite Start scholarships.
Legacy Rite Start scholarships were created in
2001 as a way to include more former patients in the program.
They are one-time awards that are intended to help students
get started in pursuing higher education. Rite Start recipients
are able to begin school knowing they have the encouragement
and support of their friends and the medical team at TSRHC.
In addition to financial aid, the Legacy Scholarship
Program offers scholarship recipients the help of mentors. Many
TSRHC staff members volunteer to mentor students throughout
their college experience. This provides a wonderful support
network for students as they are able to contact their mentor
to discuss classes, homework assignments, and everyday issues
pertaining to college life. The mentors also enjoy sending care
packages and learning about the students' progress in school.
"Being a mentor to one of our scholarship
recipients has been a rewarding experience," said Ashley
Reaves, public relations officer at TSRHC. "It has given
me an opportunity to share insights on how to succeed in college
without being overwhelmed with all of the academic and social
pressures."
Overall, the Legacy Scholarship Program extends
the hospital's investment in its patients by giving them the
tools they need to excel in today's society. TSRHC is dedicated
to building on its legacy of care and commitment by helping
patients pursue the educational opportunities of their choice
so they may reach their potential and realize their dreams.
The Legacy Scholarship Program is funded entirely
by private donations. One of the most gratifying ways for a
donor to fund scholarships is through the Legacy Endowment Fund.
Hospital friends, board members, and patient families have found
that endowing a scholarship is a wonderful way to remember a
loved one or establish a continuing legacy.
Endowed gifts are invested and the interest earned
on the investment is used to fund scholarships. They usually
begin with a gift of $10,000. An endowment that reaches $40,000
has historically generated enough income to fund a $2,000 scholarship.
Currently, the Legacy Scholarship Program has more than 25 endowments
totaling over $700,000. The generosity of hospital friends has
allowed the program to grow and expand since its founding nearly
16 years ago.
TSRHC is a world leader in serving children with
pediatric orthopedic conditions, certain related neurological
disorders, and learning disabilities. Providing Texas children
with state-of-the-art medical care for more than 80 years, the
hospital has never charged a patient family for treatment.
