The Supreme Council's Development Office is pleased to announce the addition of a new member to our team. Her name is Barbara Golden, and she is located at the House of the Temple in Washington, D.C. Barbara will serve full-time as the new Director of Planned Giving. In addition to this area, she will be helping with major gifts. Barbara was born in Washington, D.C, and has lived in Maryland for most of her life. She is an attorney and has considerable experience in tax-planning, commercial real estate, and corporate law. Barbara also managed the legal services program of a non-profit organization and has done fund-raising, marketing, and program management. She is eager to use her skills for the benefit of our Scottish Rite Foundations.

Since joining our team in late November 2001, Barbara has been busy reviewing our current gift files and making sure that everyone who has made a gift to us has been recognized for his or her contribution. We want to thank all of our previous donors and to let everyone know that our Scottish Rite Donor Recognition Program continues to grow. Your contributions greatly assist our many charitable endeavors.

Since joining our office, Barbara has been busy helping with the Scottish Rite Foundation Charitable Gift Annuity Program, the Scottish Rite Foundation Pooled Income Fund, and our charitable trusts. In fact, on her third day with us, Barbara helped finalize a charitable remainder annuity trust, valued at $1 million, to benefit our RiteCare Childhood Language Program. If you or anyone has a question about our RiteCare Program, please send us an e-mail to ritecare@srmason-sj.org or use the contact information at the head of this article. Currently, she is working with a donor to establish a charitable remainder unitrust that eventually will fund college and post-graduate scholarships. The Scottish Rite Foundation, Southern Jurisdiction, USA will administer these scholarships.

Please consider the benefits of participating in the Scottish Rite Foundation Charitable Gift Annuity Program or the Pooled Income Fund. A contribution to these programs will provide lifetime income and attractive tax benefits, such as the bypass of capital gains tax and a tax deduction. The minimum contribution to the Scottish Rite Foundation Gift Annuity Program or the Pooled Income Fund is $5,000. Participants are now able to designate a local Scottish Rite Foundation as the remainder beneficiary. The Development Office can provide a complete analysis for anyone wishing to contribute to the Pooled Income Fund or to the Charitable Gift Annuity Program. We also can provide information on the benefits of setting up a charitable remainder trust. To receive a free analysis of a contribution to the Gift Annuity Program, the Pooled Income Fund or a charitable remainder trust, please contact our Development Office.

Planned giving is a great source of funding for Scottish Rite Foundations throughout the Southern Jurisdiction. The Scottish Rite Foundation's brochure, "A Circle from Childhood to Childhood," is a clear, concise review of planned giving. The brochure includes a chart outlining the benefits of different gift vehicles. It is an excellent tool to help you to determine the type of gift vehicle that best suits your needs. The brochure covers seven types of gifts:

1. Bequest in Wills
2. Life Insurance Policies
3. Gifts of Stocks and Securities
4. The Scottish Rite Foundation Pooled Income Fund
5. The Scottish Rite Foundation Charitable Gift Annuity Program
6. Charitable Remainder Annuity Trusts
7. Charitable Remainder Unitrusts.

The brochure's chart outlines the income to the donor, the payment schedule, the taxation of income, the benefits to the donor, and the value to the Scottish Rite Foundation. Please let us know if you would like to receive a free copy of this brochure, "A Circle from Childhood to Childhood."

It is our goal to provide Scottish Rite members and friends with the most current and accurate information on estate planning. One of the basic rules in planned giving is first to take care of your personal financial needs and your family's needs before making any planned giving commitments. Additionally, we always recommend using your own attorney or accountant for advice before making any financial decisions. We hope the brochure, "A Circle from Childhood to Childhood," will be a useful planning tool for you and your advisors. Please let us continue to advance our mission of helping America's children read, learn, and hear through the RiteCare Program and through our Scottish Rite scholarships for deserving students.

If you have been thinking of making a charitable gift, a contribution to the Scottish Rite Pooled Income or the Scottish Rite Foundation Charitable Gift Annuity Program, please contact Barbara at 1-800-486-3331, extension 163. Barbara can also help you with information on other planned giving vehicles such as charitable remainder unitrusts. You will find Barbara to be helpful, knowledgeable, and a very nice person. If you have any questions about planned giving, Barbara will be happy to assist you with your plans.
