There are 254 counties in Texas; at least 102 of them have been
named after Masons. They include: Stephen F. Austin (the "Father
of Texas," the state capital is also named after him), Robert
Emmett, Bledsoe Baylor (established a missionary school and then
founded Baylor University), James Bowie, David Crockett, George
M. Dallas, Rev. John B. Denton, Jack Hayes (Texas Ranger Captain),
Sam Houston (the "Hero of San Jacinto" and first President
of the Republic of Texas), Anson Jones (first Grand Master), Mirabeau
B. Lamar ("Father of Education in Texas"), James Madison,
Pat Neff (Governor and Grand Master), James K. Polk (11th President
of the U.S.), Sul Ross, Adolphus Sterne (first Scottish Rite Mason
in Texas), Edward H. Tarrant (the county where Southwestern Baptist
Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth, is located), William B. Travis,
and George Washington.
