Scottish Rite Junior ROTC Program for High Schools

Commencing in 1998, the Supreme Council, Southern Jurisdiction, initiated a program of recognition for outstanding Junior ROTC students (high schools), earlier approved in November 1997 by the Assistant Secretary of Defense. This initiative recognizes high school youth enrolled in the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) with an award for their scholastic excellence and demonstrated ideals of Americanism. The award consists of a medal and ribbon to be worn on the JROTC uniform and a certificate suitable for framing.

Scottish Rite ROTC Program for Colleges/Universities

In 2002, the Scottish Rite, Southern Jurisdiction, initiated an additional Scottish Rite, Youth Program. This initiative, approved by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense in August 2002, recognizes second and third year cadets enrolled in the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) with an academic standing in the top 25 percent of their class and who encourage and demonstrate patriotism by deeds or conduct during participation in extracurricular activities or community projects. A similar award exists for cadets in the Junior ROTC program. Like the JROTC Award Program, the recipient receives three recognitions: a certificate suitable for framing, a medal engraved with the Scottish Rite Double-headed Eagle, and ROTC Education and Americanism; and a ribbon which, like the medal can be worn with the ROTC uniform.

International Order of DeMolay Paul R. Kach DeMolay Essay Contest

Ill. Paul R. Kach, 33° (1900-1983) was an outstanding member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Baltimore, Maryland, and an ardent supporter of the Order of DeMolay. The essay contest, which bears his name, was established in his memory in 1984. Each year since then, the Scottish Rite supports the International Order of DeMolay via the Scottish Rite Paul R. Kach DeMolay Essay Contest. We are proud to work with this fine Masonic youth organization in encouraging the moral and intellectual growth of young men across the nation. The DeMolay International headquarters selects a theme. Awards in two categories (10th grade and below and 11th grade and above) are available in each of DeMolay’s eight regions, and two Grand Prizes in each category are selected annually from regional DeMolay winners by a committee of distinguished Scottish Rite Masons. Regional winners are awarded $300 each, and the two national winners receive an additional $1,200. The essays of the national winners in each category are then published together in the Scottish Rite Journal, along with an announcement of all winners. Young men who are members of the Order of DeMolay and are interested in participating in this essay contest should contact their Regional leader (State Executive Officer).
